Rotary Club of Auckland Club Meeting Monday, 4 September 12.15 for 12.30 pm
Next Monday is an important meeting in our Rotary calendar as we host our District Governor Vineeta Nand. DG Vineeta’s home base is Fiji and she is prioritising Club visits in the Auckland region over the next 2 weeks. It is really important to have a strong attendance at this meeting and I ask you to join me in showing your support. In addition, one of the traditions I valued was the 5 minute speaker as it gives us an opportunity to learn more from our members and visitors. So next week will be the first of many to come!
“Her passion for community service and outreach led her to join Rotary in 2004. Fast forward to 2023, and she is now our District Governor for District 9920. District Governor Vineeta recalls, “Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self resonated with me and still holds very true to this day.”
She adds, “Getting to this key leadership role hasn’t been without its challenges but, shadowing me throughout has been my late husband and my family.” DG Vineeta attributes much support to her parents, who in her words, “instilled discipline” and her late husband Nainendra, who encouraged and inspired her; and her cast of friends – stoic in all their support.
Beach Clean up
Our group will be hosted by the National Aquarium of New Zealand to clean up litter along an area of Napier’s Marine Parade. The Aquarium is a participant in the nationwide litter intelligence programme that will involve us as “citizen scientists” collecting and categorising litter from the beachfront, contributing to a national database. The staff will give an insight into what type of litter is found on our beaches and how we could form our own monitoring sites becoming citizen scientists to help solve the problem of marine litter.
Grab Bags Emergency Kit Assembly
Our recent history has shown that environmental disasters can hit us at any time and happen more frequently. There is an awareness in the community that we need to be prepared, but don’t always know how.
Grab Bags is a Rotary First Light Community Group Growth Plan project meeting this need by providing emergency kits to families in the disaster-prone areas of Hawkes Bay and Tairawhiti.
We invite you to participate in the assembly of the bags at avenue near the Napier Conference Centre. Hear how our local Rotary Clubs have come together to make this project a reality and the opportunities for the project to be replicated in other regions. Enjoy the chance to fill emergency kits with essential items ready for distribution to vulnerable families.
